In the business & finance group, you’ll be advising on general corporate and commercial matters, ranging from corporate finance and banking to international real estate and joint ventures.
Our commercial disputes group handles those cases, such as defamation, directors’ and officers’ liability, bankruptcy or professional indemnity, which don’t fall into one of our particular business groups. Recently, we’ve been involved in the Equitable Life litigation and have acted for the owner of a Formula 1 racing team.

The commercial disputes group at Ince deals with a wide variety of disputes, some of which may touch on shipping or insurance issues, but many of which involve different matters altogether. In dealing with these commercial disputes, you tend to use the same core skills and expertise, but apply them in a different context. You therefore immerse yourself in the peculiarities of a particular industry or situation as you deal with each case.
I was involved for several years in the Equitable Life litigation. This was a high profile case that attracted a lot of media attention. The issues in dispute were extremely interesting and the trial ultimately lasted around six months, involving 17 parties.
I’m currently dealing with a large commercial case involving allegations of fraud and litigation in a number of jurisdictions. There are about eight of us on the team at Ince.

During my training I had a wide spread of shipping and insurance work. The shipping work involved an extensive amount of non-contentious transactional work within the business and finance area of the firm’s practice.
Within the business & finance group we’ve increased our work for banks, financing the acquisition of all types of vessels and offshore units. We’ve just completed a deal where we were acting for a syndicate of banks on an US$805m loan, which involved 15 new-build vessels.
I’m also involved in a wide range of non-contentious work in the shipping and offshore oil and gas industries, including drafting joint venture agreements, advising on charterparties and various offshore projects, and negotiating shipbuilding contracts.
I also work on the contentious side of the firm’s practice in the same areas in which I’ve built up expertise on the non-contentious side. It gives me experience of both sides of the fence and hopefully makes me a more rounded lawyer.
