Oil Well Blow-Out

Although set for a six week trial, the outcome was the withdrawal by insurers of their threatened avoidance of the policy and a satisfactory negotiated settlement.

A major blow-out occurred in a well being drilled onshore in the former Soviet Union. Local law governed the insurance policy, however the disputes were to be resolved in England. Insurers resisted a multi-million dollar control of well claim on the grounds of alleged breaches of warranties, with particular reference to operating standards.

The team, led by a Russian-speaking English partner, handled the matter for the assured. The case entailed collecting extensive factual evidence in the former Soviet Union, liaising with experts in onshore drilling and in local law and conducting litigation in the Commercial Court in London.
