WHAT WE DO / INSURANCE & REINSURANCE

Ince & Co has risen to the pinnacle of the market, reflecting the extent to which the firm has ‘evolved into the top-calibre, full range provider’ that it has.
Chambers & Partners, 2009

Ince & Co’s insurance and reinsurance practice is seen as one of the strongest in the world, with a reputation built on the astute handling of complex cases married to a strong grasp of industry realities.

Our client base encompasses all manner of insurance buyers, as well as many of the most discriminating insurance and reinsurance companies and Lloyd’s syndicates. In addition we advise brokers and intermediaries, captives and a wide range of specialist insurance service providers. Our lawyers handle issues arising in all non-life classes of insurance, with several of them specialising in the more complex challenges posed by marine, energy, political risk and liability risks, as well, of course, as reinsurance.

Widely respected by industry professionals, policy wordings and market documents drafted by Ince are used daily throughout the London market. We have played a role in many major developments affecting the market, from external phenomena such as wars or outbreaks of piracy to internal challenges such as the PCW scandal, the Lloyd’s Names LMX and Longtail Litigation, Reconstruction and Renewal, the Personal Accident Spiral and insurance contract law reform.

In addition to numerous arbitrations, including the benchmark Dawson’s Field, our lawyers have acted in many of the key trials establishing the principles of insurance and reinsurance law. From the House of Lords ruling on the duty of good faith at placement in Pan Atlantic v Pine Top, through the evolution of the fraudulent devices principle in The Aegeon to aggregation issues arising from the September 11 attack on the World Trade Center, Ince continues to participate in the highest profile and most complex disputes.

Our insurance expertise is not limited to contentious matters; aside from market assignments such as the London Market Project, Ince & Co’s corporate and regulatory group offers a full service to insurers, reinsurers and intermediaries worldwide.

The firm has strong links with international insurance and reinsurance markets. We have nine offices worldwide and close working relationships with lawyers and arbitrators in most jurisdictions. Members of Ince & Co’s global insurance and reinsurance group are recognised throughout the industry.
